HUNTING IN THE SOUTH OF ROMANIA Hunting is one of the early instincts of the human species. Primitive man used to hunt in order to eat. For modern man, however, hunting is much more than that. It is a means of disposing of troublesome species, and a way to keep populations of predatory animals in check.
Cristian Mungiu’s film tells the dramatic story of illegal abortions in Romania during the communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu. As the director himself put it, it is a story about decisions, responsibility and life choices, about solidarity and friendship. “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” took film critics by storm in 2007, winning the much-coveted Palme d’Or in Cannes, the FIPRESCI Award for best picture of the year, the European Film Academy Trophy, the Hollywood World Award and a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Foreign Language Film”, a first for Romanian cinema.
